Enterprise corruption is a violation of New York State’s Organized Crime Control Act, the release said.
Fourteen of the defendants have been arrested, and three were still being sought, the Queen district attorney’s office said. Three of the accused were based in New York.
The suspects, spread between Nevada, California and New York, were charged in a 126-count indictment with enterprise corruption, money laundering, promoting gambling and conspiracy, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a press release.
“There are some who would argue that Internet gambling is a victimless crime. I very much disagree,” Brown said.
The alleged ringleader of the gambling enterprise, Cyrus Irani, 37, “decided on wager limits, approved new accounts and all money collected eventually funneled up to him,” the release said.. The three suspects arrested in New York were arraigned in Queens Supreme Court and pleaded not guilty, the New York Times reported.
According to the indictment by a Queens County grand jury, the gambling operation used offshore internet websites and 800 phone numbers to serve more than 2,000 active gamblers placing wagers on sports including football, basketball, baseball, hockey.
Irani was arrested at his home in Santa Clarita, California, on Wednesday KTLA-TV reported.
LOS ANGELES Seventeen people in three states have been charged with operating an illegal sports gambling ring that utilized offshore websites to book more than $32 million in bets each year, prosecutors said on Wednesday.
The indictments came after a 20-month-long investigation by federal and New York law enforcement.
The accused allegedly accepted payments using credit cards and bank deposits ranging from $5,000 to $270,000, the press release said.
It was unclear when Irani would be arraigned or how he intended to plead

Sobek played both tennis as well as handball but was looking for an extremely fast paced sport that mostly anybody could easily pickup without a large learning curve for the rules. Racquetball is not televised very frequently as it is difficult to film and keep track of the ball moving at high speeds. Soon afterwards in 1969 Robert W. These associations are the International Racquetball Tournament, the Women’s Professional Racquetball Organization and the Legends Tour. Finally, in 2003, the USRA changed their name for the final time to mimic other Olympic sports associations and coined themselves United States Racquetball (USAR).
Today Racquetball has not been growing like it was in the 1970s and 1980s but the fan base stays strong with an estimated 5.6 million players.
Racquetball was originally created by a man named Joe Sobek. Sobek continued promoting the sport which was easy for most to pickup since over 40,000 handball courts exist across America.
There are currently three associations that handle professional games. In 1973 Robert left the IRA and formed two other racquetball associations none of which have became as prominent as the IRA. Kendler created the IRA, The International Racquetball Association.
In 1952 Joe founded the IPRA, The International Paddler’s Racquets Association. Joe named this sport, ‘Paddle Rackets’ which eventually was renamed ‘Racquetball’ by professional tennis player Bob McInerny . When Racquetball is televised, the U.S. Joe came up with the sport at the Greenwhich YMCA in a handball court. Eventually the IRA became the American Amateur Racquetball Association which changed its name again in the late 1990s to the United States Racquetball Association. Solidified the rules and created the very first official rule book. Open championships in Memphis, Tennessee is one of the few tournaments that gets air time.
Thus, gambling practices cause a huge financial burden on the families of the affected and on the society at large.. They tend to stay away from their near ones, resulting in distrust between them and their loved ones.
? Similar to how an individual keeps consuming substances like drugs or alcohol to experience an altered mental state, he continues to gamble. Their debt keeps building and it may reach an amount that exceeds their capacity to repay.
? People who fall prey to gambling tend to remain away from their families and waste money on other bad practices. Some take to substance abuse to supplement the high they get from winning huge sums while gambling. The addiction robs a gambler of all the productive time and leads to loss of efficiency at work. The effect is similar to that of having a drug or a drink, which is why gambling changes one’s mental state and mood.
? Gambling has proven to be addictive. Some go that way to forget the sorrow of losing big sums when gambling.
? They start borrowing money and take secret loans. Because of this, they land in worse situations and take the wrong decisions in life.
? Gambling at the cost of one’s job results in a decline in the quality of his professional life. When they lose the money they had risked, they further gamble to recover the lost amount and it becomes a vicious circle even they can’t escape from.
? According to a research by NCPG, 76 percent of problem gamblers are likely to have a major depressive disorder.
Compulsive gambling leads to bankruptcy
? The addiction to gambling can leave one in bankruptcy. According to the National Research Council, 10 to 17% of the children of problem gamblers have been abused and so have 25 to 50% of the partners of problems gamblers.
? Substances of abuse are served at casinos and in pubs and clubs, thus increasing the likelihood of gamblers consuming them. Betting is a mentally taxing activity, and as one goes on risking more and more money, anxiety starts building.
? Research has shown that gambling can lead to harmful behavior in people. The stress of risking huge amounts of money or the frustration after losing it can increase the tendency of abuse in gamblers. The addiction gets on to the gamblers to such an extent that they fail to think wisely before acting. The greed never ends and they keep betting more and more. The decision to gamble money is based on three parameters namely; how much to bet, the predictability of the event, and the conditions agreed upon, between the gamblers. It soon becomes a habit that can’t be broken.
? According to the University of New York, in people with alcohol use disorders, the chances of developing an addiction to gambling are 23 times higher.
? As gambling leads to increased criminal activities, in a way, gamblers add to the burden on prisons and the legal system.
Initially, one looks at gambling as a way to run away from life’s problems, or from stress, anger, and loneliness. To add to the so-called merry atmosphere, gamblers often smoke or drink while playing.
? People continue gambling with the greed of winning money. Due to lost mental peace, they may ill-treat their spouse and children. The two go hand in hand. This proves to be detrimental to their social and family life. A recreational activity is supposed to be refreshing and relaxing, but something like gambling is contrary to the very purpose of recreation. On giving a serious consideration to the negative effects of gambling, we realize that it is best avoided.
? The stress from gambling may lead to health issues like ulcers, stomach problems, muscle pains, headaches, and problems with sleep.
? Children of parents who are problem gamblers or gambling addicts tend to feel abandoned and angry, further increasing stress and leading to strained family relations.
? Gamblers often exhibit mood swings and a strangely secretive behavior. A study by the same university suggested that 73% of the individuals who are imprisoned are found to be problem gamblers.
Gambling = Thoughtless Expenditure + Waste of Time
? An Austrian study said that around 1 in 5 suicidal patients had a gambling problem.
? The costs of treating compulsive gamblers are huge. Card games, coin tossing, and dice-based games are some non-casino based forms of gambling. Sports betting and arbitrage betting are the other types. In spite of the losses incurred, they continue betting. Rehabilitating the gambling addicts needs money and time, and the process is not very easy. ? Gambling can lead to criminal activities. Over time, it becomes a habit, and eventually an obsession that can’t be overcome. It only leads to a thoughtless expenditure of money and valuables.
? A majority of those addicted to gambling have substance abuse disorders.
? Gambling is practiced as a means of recreation. The skill of a gambler lies in weighing the three parameters and making a decision about what amount should be staked and how much should be expected in return.
? Apart from absence at work and drop in efficiency, a common observation is that gamblers tend to steal money and engage in fraudulent behavior to recover from financial losses incurred when gambling, or to get more money to bet.
? Addiction to gambling has been linked with substance abuse. The National Council of Problem Gambling (NCPG) describes this type of gambling behavior as problem gambling.
Gambling refers to the betting of money on an event with an uncertain outcome, with the intent of winning additional wealth. Their mental state can even lead to suicidal tendencies.
? Additionally, rehabilitation and public assistance systems are taxed.
Mental and physical health problems, financial issues, and conflicts in the family are among the common negative effects of gambling. It can drag you into crime, gambling isn’t fun.
Games offered in casinos, table games like poker, Red Dog, and Blackjack, as also electronic games like Slot Machine and Video Poker are some of the common types of gambling. In the following sections of this Buzzle article, we discuss the negative effects of gambling on the individual and society.
? Problem gamblers and addicts tend to abuse their family members. Thus, gambling can have a grave economic impact which is difficult to reverse.
? Over time, the practice of gambling starts becoming a habit and begins to have damaging effects at psychological, physical, and social levels. The addiction has negative effects on one’s physical and mental health and it proves to be detrimental to one’s social, personal, and professional life. Addiction to gambling, coupled with substance abuse can make the gamblers physically abusive towards their family. They engage in gambling activities at the cost of their time with family and friends. It causes a decline in his/her work performance, thus hampering his career.
? Studies show that children with a sibling or parent addicted to gambling, are more likely to take to substance abuse.
You could be at gunpoint or holding the gun. Forget satisfaction or peace, it is not even refreshing in the real sense. Six to eight million people in America are estimated to have a gambling problem.
? According to a study by the George State University, 50% of the problem gamblers commit crime. The addiction leads people to continue with gambling irrespective of whether they earn or lose in the deal
They did not settle in the first place they landed.
The girls and women prepared what the men had hunted: wild turkey, wild geese, wild duck, meat pies, lobsters, eels, clams, oysters, fresh fish of all kinds. In order to not let the Native Americans who lived nearby know how much their ranks had shrank, they buried the dead in the dark so no one could see their decreasing numbers.
This outfit is so cute for baby’s first turkey day. There were two ships that were to sail to the New World, The Speedwell and The Mayflower.
What makes this an interesting fact is their lack of hygiene. There were no showers or laundry, so most of the people did not bathe and wore the same clothing for all sixty-six days of the voyage! Can you imagine the bugs, the dirt and the odor on that ship?
During their first winter in Plimouth, more than half of the people died from illness. The name of the baby was Oceanus Hopkins.
10. The Mayflower left Plymouth England on September 6, 1620.
The Jewish holiday of Sukkot celebrates the fall harvest, and being religious people, the Pilgrims based their feast on this holiday found in the Bible.
5. Because of the winds, they were unable to cook their meals and ate everything cold. The travelers had to spend most of the sixty-six days of the journey underneath the ship in cramped quarters.
Do You Know These 10 Pilgrim Facts?
As you sit down to feast on turkey, sweet potatoes, corn and pumpkin pie this coming Thanksgiving, you can play a little trivia game using these ten interesting facts about the Pilgrims.
Get together with your kids to create this 3D puzzle of the Mayflower.
This interesting fact about the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving tells more than what we are taught in school. Native Americans Squanto and Samoset saved the day.
Their two Native American friends, Squanto and Samoset, spoke perfect English. The Mayflower was a cargo ship and not meant to carry the 102 Pilgrims and 30 crew members. It comes in several sizes.
7. A baby boy was born on board the Mayflower.
In the fall, when the harvest was great and bountiful, the Pilgrims decided to give thanks to G-d and their Native American friends for helping them through their first year in the New World.
The journey from England to the New World was an uncomfortable one. Squanto taught the Pilgrims to plant with fertilizer, such as fish heads, with their seeds.
Despite the horrid conditions on the Mayflower, a baby was born while it was crossing the ocean. The Speedwell, made two attempts to leave with the Mayflower, but each time it leaked. The survivors has to bury their dead in the dark.
The Pilgrims had very little variety in their diet. After a search party of the healthiest men went out to find Plimouth, they again set sail and land on December 21.
6. The Mayflower crew and the Pilgrims did not get along very well.

2. The Native American guests brought five deer, popcorn, corn, carrots, cucumbers, turnips, onions, radishes, beets and cabbages.
Another interesting fact is that by the time the journey was over, the sailors were impressed by their fortitude.
On November 9, 1620, the people spotted land at Cape Cod. They ate “hardtack”, a dry biscuit. Insects infested much of the food that was aboard the ship.
4. There was no bathroom, so they had to use buckets to relieve themselves. While several of the Pilgrims (called Separatists) did want to flee England for religious freedom, others went to the New World for business opportunities, some were hired hands and some were servants.
9. The sailors called them “glib-glabbety puke stockings.” Conversely, the Pilgrims did not like the sailors’ “salty” language.
So while you gobble up your turkey with family and friends, see if they know any of these ten interesting facts about the Pilgrims.

“That ain’t what you do. is still going to call the local bookmaker to bet” because it requires no money, he said.
If it becomes legal, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has said there would be strict state oversight, much like the way it works at his state’s Atlantic City’s casinos.
But Angelo Lutz, who is a legitimate businessman and restaurateur, told Ford that if New Jersey wins, it still won’t have much of an impact on organized crime. You’re not looking for John and Nancy Adams to walk in and order champagne cocktails and pomegranate martinis,” he said. “Gambling’s going on anyway. “They won’t even put a dent in it.”
To watch Jack Ford’s full report, watch the video in the player above.
When Ford asked Luntz if legalizing sports betting would make bookmakers lose some of their business, he said “who cares.”
“You want the degenerate gamblers to bet with you. No one’s ever gonna stop it.”
Ford asked Alite why he’s okay with letting New Jersey legalizing sports gambling.
Bookmakers and organized crime members have long profited in the high-stakes world of illegal sports gambling.
“Because they won’t take it over,” he said. That ain’t your weed. That ain’t where you draw your money from.”
After two decades with the mob, John Alite told Ford he has given up bookmaking, and now supports efforts to legalize sports gambling.
“If that can help people in the community for their taxes, roads, the infrastructure of whatever goes on in Jersey, why not,” he said.
The inside post in turf routes actually showed a small profit, but this was based on a small sample size and cannot be relied upon. My own studies have shown a similar advantage for the inside post in routes.
Horse Racing System #2 – Bet horses that have an excuse for a poor performance in their last race. My computer studies of pedigree, based on nearly 100,000 races, suggest that using pedigree in that manner offers no advantage to the player.
The horse with the best last race speed figure (whether Beyer, BRIS, or Equibase) may not be the best horse in the race, but he’s probably not far off, so we can use that as a proxy for selection purposes.
Horse Racing System #1 – In maiden races, bet the horse with the best last race speed figure that has had at least two career starts. This is another mistake that bettors make: in a race with a clear standout, many people give up on the win pool and bet their choice to place, thinking that they’ll get paid even if the favorite wins.
This causes the favorite to be under bet in the place pool, leading to a profit opportunity for us to take advantage of by betting the favorite to place. This is somewhat counter-intuitive since you’d expect that horses with good pedigrees that end up in the maiden claiming ranks probably can’t run at all.
However, just because systems won’t make you rich doesn’t mean there’s no place for them at all in a horseplayer’s arsenal. It should go without saying that you should actually like the favorite’s chances after evaluating the race with your own handicapping.
How do we identify the best pedigree, then? If you’re using the DRF past performances, use the stud fee as a proxy for quality, and the Tomlinson figure to judge suitability for the distance and surface. None of them work.
Instead of blindly betting all horses breaking from the inside, you might use this to supplement your handicapping, paying particular attention to the inside horse, and betting it when you like the horse on other handicapping grounds. I was able to replicate this result in my own study of nearly 100,000 races conducted a decade later.
Horse Racing System #3 – In maiden claiming races, bet the horse with the best pedigree. In most case the public seems to take a horse’s last running line at face value. If the tote board suggests that the public is overlooking these mitigating circumstances, make your play.
In that spirit. Few bother to even look at the comment line for the race, let alone take the trouble to seek out and watch the replay of the race. Thanks for reading, and see you in the winner’s circle.
In fact, pedigree does not generally offer wager value with one curious exception: well bred horses do surprisingly well in maiden claiming races. One of the few anomalies turned up by Michael Nunamaker in his pioneering computer study “Modern Impact Values”, published in 1994, was that horses breaking from the inside post position in route races won more than their fair share of races, and were under-bet by the public. The inside post combined with early speed is a particularly potent combination, since the horse will not have to exert himself as much to gain his preferred position at the front of the pack.
. I’ve identified some of the most useful handicapping factors that have a proven history of doing much better than the track takeout and put them together with some simple rules that should make your trips to the racetrack more fun and profitable. This offers opportunity to more diligent players.
In the first place, the parimutuel takeout in horse racing is large (over 15%) and the mutuel pools are relatively efficient, so that even systems with a strong basis in reality can’t overcome the size of the takeout.
Looking for a dead simple horse racing system that will allow you to quit your job and make a living betting the horses in just 10 minutes a day? Good luck with that!
Horse Racing System #5 – Bet Horses breaking from the inside post in route races. This system takes advantage of one of the few glaring inefficiencies in the parimutuel pools, namely that first and second time starters are badly over-bet.
For as long as humans have bet on horse racing there have been system sellers trying to con the gullible into parting with their hard earned money with the lure of easy profits to be made on the sport of kings. To the extent that most handicappers use pedigree at all, it’s usually to identify horses that may improve when switched to the turf, or those who may be expected to win as first time starters. It must follow, therefore, that if we bet the best horse that has started at least twice, we stand an excellent chance of beating the takeout, particularly in races that have several first and second time starters.
Nunamaker reported that the inside post in dirt route races won at a 20% greater than expected rate, and lost only 10 cents on the dollar, much better than the track take. My study suggests that’s not the case.
Horse Racing System #4 – Bet low-priced favorites to place. They will, however increase the chances of a profitable day at the races by ensuring that your wager dollars go where they have the best chance of success. Just don’t expect to quit your day job.
None of these systems will make you rich, or even guarantee that you will make a profit. Let me let you in on a little secret about these “magic formulas”. With the BRIS pp’s you can use the Sire Production Factor in concert with the pedigree rating. Most people who love horse racing would be thrilled just to win a little more and lose a little less on their trips to the track.
Second, the very nature of the parimutuel system itself means that any profits to be made from following a particular set of rules will quickly be arbitraged away as the followers of that system drive down the odds of horses chosen by the system.
For instance, many speed figure handicappers reported making horse racing profits in the 60′s and 70′s simply by betting horses with the best last race speed figure. Because speed figures have gained in popularity over the years, anyone following that system now would have trouble coming up with gas money for the ride home from the track.
Look for comment lines like “bled”, “lost rider”, “clipped heels”, “stumbled”, “steadied”, “between horses”, “rank”, and “jumped shadows” that suggest that a horse’s last race was not indicative of its true ability. The horse with the best combination of the two is the play.
First time starters return only about 60 cents on the dollar, and second time starters are only a little better, returning less than 70 cents on the dollar
This has helped me immensely as a sportscaster, and beyond. But my mother and sister …
For the past two decades, Jim Nantz has been living his dream as a leading announcer for CBS Sports.
But for all his success, his father’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease has been his greatest challenge.
“Just kindness, integrity and the goodness. I have so many people through the years … Oh, it would’ve been — his arms would’ve been around her, and he’d have showered her with kisses and praise and all the love in the world.”
He recounts how his dad inspired him to pursue his dream — and was with him every step of the way, until a stroke in 1995 and the onset of Alzheimer’s changed everything forever.
In a moving, gripping interview with co-anchor Harry Smith on The Early Show Wednesday, Nantz describes the devastating toll Alzheimer’s has taken on the entire family — as well as the warm, loving times with and memories of his dad before Alzheimer’s hit.
Nantz recalled having to ultimately make the “wrenching” decision to move his dad “out of his own home” and into a nursing facility.
Nantz writes about it in his new book, “Always By My Side: A Father’s Grace and a Sports Journey Unlike Any Other.”. the tributes still come in about what a great man, Jim Nantz — that’s my father. When she visits him, it’s, ‘Hi Granddaddy. Since Alzheimer’s has taken him from us, many great men have stepped into his place — not his shoes, but his place — and have served as surrogate father figures to me” — men such as the first President Bush, and Arnold Palmer.
To see the entire interview, click on the arrow in the image below:
What was the most enduring lesson his dad taught him?
In the book, Nantz honors his father — always his biggest fan.
“When I was writing the book,” Nantz also told CBS News, “I thought about how it would give me a chance to tell my daughter about the grandfather she never knew. That would be it.”
Later, Nantz told Smith, “My father was my hero and inspiration, and really made me believe that always this life of working for CBS would one day be obtainable. I told him not to worry, that I wasn’t going to leave my post as a sportscaster. She was just a year old when he suffered the stroke, and his life took the turn that unfortunately there was no recourse for. … I was named after my father and grandfather. And then I admitted to him, and to myself, that the hardest part about the decision was not having my dad around to ask for advice.”
In the book, Nantz recalls, “Arnold gently tapped me on the heart and said softly, ‘Jimmy, he’s right there! What you must understand is that he prepared you your whole life to make this decision. I’m so proud of her, because none of that love’s ever really been transferred back. I mean, it just came through every pore. As he walked out of the clubhouse, with thousands of people jostling for his attention, he pointed at me, walked over, and gave me a big handshake and hug. He had heard that I was on the brink of making a professional decision that he didn’t agree with — and before teeing off, he wanted to make sure he’d heard wrong. “My father taught me to look for the good in people, and to properly nurture my relationships. people reading this say, ‘Wow! I thought this would be a sports book!’ The women are really relating to it so heavily.”
“My most memorable moment with (Palmer),” Nantz says, “was on the occasion of the historic 2002 Masters in Augusta, which at the time appeared to be his farewell round. You heard his voice, you just didn’t realize it.’ “
“I’m going to focus on honoring my father’s life on Father’s Day: the very full life he had for years before he fell victim to Alzheimer’s, and the values he stood for,” Nantz told CBS News. How are you today?’ She puts her arms around him, kisses him on the cheek, and talks to him
